「本当に最悪だよ……誰も幸せにならない結末かも」

怪我を抱えたまま出るなんて無謀だと誰もが感じているが、止める術はない。
ひなたが涙目で「本当に大丈夫ですか……？」と問うが、先輩は笑って見せる。

これで終わり……という感じじゃないね」
ひなたが辛そうに笑う。
「うん。篠田先輩は足が悪いのに、顧問不在。
事件は解決したけど、まだ問題だらけ。
先生はずっと先輩を守りたかったのに、こんな結果になるなんて……」
俺も同感だ。誰も幸せになっていない。
だけど、先輩の覚悟も先生の過去の苦悩も、痛いほど伝わってくるから否定しきれない。
「……そういえば、沙季先輩も『このままじゃ練習どころじゃない』って嘆いてた。
でも、インターハイ本戦を狙ってる彼女は自力で何とかするかもしれないね」
ひなたは「だよね」と相槌を打つが、すぐに顔を上げて俺を見つめる。
「航平くんは、どうするの？」
「何が？」
「ほら、この事件の捜査は終わったんだし……
先生の動機もわかったし……
『サーフィンやってみたい』って気持ちは、まだある？
先生がこうなった今、どう思ってるのかなと思って」
その言葉に、一瞬胸が高鳴る。
確かに俺は「事件解決したら、サーフィン始めてみようかな」と考えていた。
それは今も変わらない。むしろ先生が見せた“保護者心理”を目の当たりにして、
怪我のリスクが怖くても「やってみたい」という思いが強まった。
「うん、正直言って、俺はサーフィンをやりたい。
足を壊すのは怖いけど……やっぱり篠田先輩や沙季先輩を見てると、
波に乗るってすごく格好いいと思うから」
ひなたは少しだけ口元をほころばせる。
「そうだよね……私も、ちょっとやってみたいかも。
怖いけど、見てるだけじゃ始まらないもん」
“見てるだけじゃダメ”――まさに篠田先輩はその生き方を体現している。
先生の暴走は決して許される行為じゃないが、そこに宿った“恐怖”と“愛情”の葛藤も知った。
つまり、サーフィンにはそれほどの魅力とリスクがあるんだと理解できたのだ。
「……じゃあ、落ち着いたら二人で始めようか。
先生が戻ってくるかどうかはわからないけど、沙季先輩や大谷も巻き込んで……
練習すれば、いつか波に立てるはず」
ひなたは「うん」と小さく頷き、互いに照れくさい笑みを浮かべる。
この先、部はどうなるかわからないけど、俺たちは一歩ずつ進みたい。
8. 「先生、消えないで」
その日の夕方、職員室の前を通りかかったとき、
黒川先生が小さな段ボールを抱えて出てくるのに遭遇した。
寂しそうな表情で、たぶん自分の私物を片付けているのだろう。
先生は俺に気づき、
「……相沢か。お前までこんな時間に何してる」と少し疲れた口調。
謹慎処分が決まり、すでに気力が失われているようにも見える。
"Teacher ......"
声が詰まる。何を言えばいいかわからないが、とにかく止めなきゃと思った。
「本当に辞めるんですか？ まだ決定じゃないですよね？」
先生は苦い笑みを浮かべて首を振る。
「今は謹慎だ。職員会議や校長判断で、最悪は免職もあり得る。
……何の言い訳もできないよ。俺がやったことは、ただの盗難だ」
「でも、先生には理由があった。
……篠田先輩を守りたかったんですよね？」
問う俺の声に、先生は目を伏せて小さく嘆息する。
「理由があれば罪が許されるわけじゃない。
生徒を守るつもりが、自分を守るための行為にすり替わっていたのかもしれない。
怖かったんだ……。生徒が俺と同じ後悔を背負うのが……」
その呟きには深い悲しみが滲む。
俺は何も言えず、ただ握り拳を作った。
「先生、俺……サーフィンやってみようと思うんです。
篠田先輩や沙季先輩を見て、怖くても挑戦するって格好いいと思ったから。
先生には……いつか戻ってきてほしい。部を捨てないでください。
生徒を守りたいなら、もっとちゃんと向き合ってほしいんです」
思いのまま、口をついて出た言葉。
先生は驚いたように俺を見つめ、かすかに目を潤ませた。
「相沢……。俺は失格の教師だ。
お前のサーフィンを指導する資格なんて……」
「そんなことないです。間違いは誰でも犯す。
先生には罪を償ってもらわなきゃだけど、サーフィン部は先生が必要だと思います。
篠田先輩だって本当は先生を必要としてる。
足が痛くても出場する彼を、最後まで見届けてあげてください」
先生は沈黙のまま段ボールを抱え直す。
決定的な答えを出せないが、表情には微かな変化がある。
「謹慎が解けるまでに、篠田が大会でどうなるか……もう見届ける資格すらないよ」
「資格はないかもしれません。でも先生しか彼を止められないし、
一番近くで理解してあげられるのは先生だと思う。
無茶するとわかっても、寄り添ってほしいんです……頼みます」
俺は深く頭を下げる。
その背中に、先生は戸惑いながらも、小さく頷いたような気がした。
「……わかった。とりあえず謹慎中は出勤できないが、もし篠田がおかしなことをしようとしたら、連絡してくれ」
それだけ言い残し、先生は廊下の奥へ消えていく。
はたから見れば何の解決にもなっていないかもしれないが、
俺には、先生が完全に投げ出していないのを感じられただけでも救いだった。
9. “顧問不在”のまま…
こうして、黒川先生の犯行が明るみに出た翌日。
サーフィン部は“顧問不在”のまま、迫り来るインターハイ予選を迎えようとしていた。
篠田先輩は足を押してでも出場する気満々。
ボードは修理すれば使えるが、時間が足りない。
果たして先輩の足は耐えられるのか……？
沙季先輩はインターハイ本戦に向けて練習を続けようとするが、
部全体が落ち込んでいるためモチベーションは下がり気味。
航平（俺）とひなたは、「事件は終わったけど、なんだかしこりが残るよね」と口にする。
だけど、これで終わりにするわけにはいかない。
篠田先輩が大会に出ると言うなら、俺たちも全力でサポートしたい。
先生の気持ちも無駄にしたくない。
「顧問の真意」は理解できたが、そこから何が生まれるのか？
篠田先輩の足は本当に大丈夫なのか？
そしてインターハイ予選はいよいよ間近――。
